Malegra 50 mg contains sildenafil citrate, which is a medication primarily used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Sildenafil works by inhibiting the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5). Nitric oxide (NO) is a key molecule involved in the relaxation of smooth muscle cells, including those in the blood vessels of the penis. In the presence of sexual stimulation, nitric oxide is released from nerve endings and endothelial cells in the penis. Nitric oxide then activates the enzyme guanylate cyclase, leading to an increase in cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) levels in the smooth muscle cells. cGMP is a second messenger that promotes smooth muscle relaxation, allowing blood to flow into the penis and causing an erection.
